What ISO 9001:2015 Actually Is
ISO 9001:2015 is a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization that defines the requirements for a quality management system (QMS). It doesn't specify what a company must do — it specifies how a company must manage what it does: defining processes, documenting them, measuring performance, and continuously improving.
Certification to ISO 9001:2015 means a company's QMS has been audited by an accredited third-party certification body — an organization accredited by a national accreditation body like ANAB (in the US) or UKAS (in the UK) — and found to comply with the standard's requirements. The certification is renewed through annual surveillance audits and a full recertification audit every three years.
This is not a self-declaration. A company cannot legitimately claim ISO 9001:2015 certification without going through this audit process.
What It Means in Practice for a Distributor
For an independent electronic component distributor, ISO 9001:2015 certification requires:
- Documented processes for purchasing, receiving, inspection, storage, and shipping — not ad hoc decisions but defined, repeatable procedures
- Incoming inspection — a documented process for verifying that received parts match what was ordered and meet quality requirements, with records
- Nonconformance management — a documented process for identifying, quarantining, and dispositioning parts that fail inspection, including how suspect-counterfeit parts are handled
- Supplier evaluation — a documented process for evaluating and monitoring the suppliers a distributor buys from
- Record retention — quality records maintained and retrievable, so any shipment can be traced after the fact
- Corrective action — a process for investigating quality failures and implementing fixes that prevent recurrence
- Management review — regular review by leadership of quality performance against defined objectives
These requirements don't guarantee a distributor will never ship a bad part. They do mean that if something goes wrong, there's a documented system to investigate what happened, contain the problem, and fix the root cause — and an external auditor verifying that the system works.
What ISO 9001:2015 Does NOT Guarantee
ISO 9001:2015 is a process standard, not a product standard. Certification means the quality management system meets the standard's requirements — it does not mean every part shipped is guaranteed to be authentic or defect-free.
Specifically, ISO 9001:2015 alone does not:
- Specify what tests must be performed on incoming components
- Require counterfeit-specific controls (those are addressed in AS5553 and AS6081, which are separate standards)
- Guarantee that a distributor has access to ERAI or GIDEP counterfeit intelligence
- Require independent laboratory testing
A distributor can be ISO 9001:2015 certified with a QMS that covers all the required elements but with a relatively light incoming inspection process. Certification is a necessary baseline — not a sufficient one for high-risk sourcing situations.
How to Verify ISO 9001:2015 Certification
Ask for the certificate. It should show:
- The certification body's name and logo — confirm they are ANAB or UKAS accredited
- The certificate holder's legal name and address
- The scope of certification — this defines what activities are covered
- The issue date and expiry date — confirm the certificate is currently valid
- The certificate number — which can often be verified directly on the certification body's website
Don't accept a claim of certification without the certificate. And check the scope carefully — a certificate that covers "office administration" but not purchasing, receiving, and shipping is not relevant to component quality.
RH Electronics and ISO 9001:2015
RH Electronics is ISO 9001:2015 certified by NQA, accredited by ANAB. The certification scope covers the purchasing, inspection, storage, and distribution of electronic components — the activities that matter for the quality of what you receive.
Combined with ERAI membership since 1998 and GIDEP participation, our ISO 9001:2015 QMS is the framework that governs how every lot is received, inspected, and shipped. See our quality program in full, or view our current ISO certificate.
