ERAI and GIDEP: The Two Watchdogs of the Component Supply Chain

When evaluating a component distributor, two memberships matter more than most: ERAI and GIDEP. Together they represent the industry's most active intelligence networks for counterfeit detection and supply-chain risk. Here's what each actually does — and what their absence should tell you.

What Is ERAI?

ERAI (formerly Electronic Resellers Association International) is a global information-services organization that monitors, investigates, and reports supply-chain risk in the electronics industry. It operates the world's largest database of suspect-counterfeit and nonconforming electronic components, and it maintains records on distributors and brokers with histories of supplying problem parts.

ERAI membership gives a distributor's quality team access to:

  • Live alerts on suspect part numbers — specific MPNs that have been reported as counterfeit or nonconforming
  • Supplier intelligence — distributors and brokers flagged for quality problems
  • Customer intelligence — buyers who have been involved in disputes or returned suspect product
  • Industry reports on counterfeit trends — which manufacturers and part types are most heavily targeted

ERAI also provides live membership verification — customers can confirm a distributor's current membership status directly on ERAI.com, which means the claim is verifiable, not just a logo on a website.

RH Electronics has been an ERAI member since July 28, 1998 — among the earliest in the industry. That's not a recent credential for a sales page; it reflects a quarter-century of engagement with the industry's primary counterfeit intelligence network.

What Is GIDEP?

GIDEP (Government-Industry Data Exchange Program) is a cooperative program between the U.S. government and industry, administered by the Department of Defense. It is the DoD's primary channel for sharing technical and quality information across the defense supply chain, including:

  • Failure experience reports — documented failures of specific components or materials
  • Diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages (DMSMS) alerts
  • Suspect and confirmed counterfeit component reports — submitted by both government agencies and industry participants
  • Performance reports on parts and materials

GIDEP participation is required by many defense contracts. It signals that a distributor is integrated into the DoD's formal supply-chain risk management ecosystem, not just the commercial counterfeit-intelligence network.

How They Work Together

ERAI operates on the commercial side of the supply chain; GIDEP operates on the defense and government side. A distributor that participates in both has access to the full picture of suspect components circulating in the market — commercial and defense, domestic and international.

When a new suspect part number is reported, a distributor with both memberships can check against both databases simultaneously, cross-reference the supplier against ERAI's distributor intelligence, and report confirmed counterfeits back through both channels.

What to Look for in a Distributor

When evaluating a component distributor, ERAI membership and GIDEP participation aren't marketing — they're measurable commitments to staying current on supply-chain risk. Ask:

  • Are they an active ERAI member? (Verifiable on ERAI.com)
  • Are they a GIDEP participant? (Listed on gidep.org)
  • Do they actually check ERAI and GIDEP before purchasing a lot? (Ask)
  • Do they report confirmed counterfeits through GIDEP? (A real participant does)

At RH Electronics, ERAI intelligence and GIDEP participation are built into the purchasing and receiving process — not a box checked for a quality audit. See our quality program for more detail on how we use these databases.
