Reading an M24308 number
M24308/4-3F is: /4 = crimp socket (receptacle) connector; -3 = shell size and contact count (here shell 3 / 25 contacts); F = the finish/class letter. Slash sheets by contact style:

Are commercial D-subs an acceptable substitute for M24308?
Not on a drawing that calls out M24308. The military part is qualified to MIL-DTL-24308 for plating thickness, insert material and mating cycles; a commercial D-sub may fit but is not the same part. If your programme allows a commercial equivalent, say so and we quote both.
